Hosted by the UK National Clean Maritime Research Hub, this year’s Clean Maritime Research Conference took place at Bayes Business School in London. Bringing together industry experts, academics and stakeholders from the maritime sector, the event catalysed insightful discussions around driving sustainable innovation for maritime fuels, port operations and infrastructure.

Given our partnerships with leading shipping, port and logistics organisations, we were thrilled to be invited to join the conference. There was genuine excitement from all attendees for uniting towards a greener future for the maritime industry.

We enjoyed sharing how our simulation and scenario exploration technology enables strategic initiatives for decarbonisation, emissions reduction, adoption of alternative fuels and circular economy - ultimately helping leaders to meet their sustainability goals and deadlines ahead of time.

Overall, it was a truly inspiring event from start to finish, with captivating and varied content. Read on for some of our key takeaways:

Decarbonisation won’t happen overnight

With leaders like MAERSK adopting alternative fuels such as green methanol, marine transportation has potential to be one of the most carbon efficient ways of moving goods, especially when compared to other modes of transport such as air and road.

However, there is a long way to go and, as Dr Jo North from Port of Tyne said in her presentation, we cannot sit around waiting for it to happen. In order to drive change for sustainability, we need to start innovating and go forwards from there. There will be mistakes along the way, but these should be embraced and used to drive further innovation.

The event highlighted the role freeports will play in this transition, by providing environments and infrastructure built to support Net Zero and sustainability innovation. We are working with various ports and freeports across the UK, using digital models to enable circular economy and predict social impact - saving them millions and bringing further investment into the ports and their surrounding areas.

Leveraging technology for improved sustainability

We must begin to view technology as an enabler for reaching industry wide Net Zero and decarbonisation goals. But to do this, we must first encourage the perspective that sustainability is an investment rather than a cost.

Many of the presentations and panel discussions throughout the event recognised how digital twins and data science can help leaders overcome complexity and build business cases to justify the ROI of sustainability initiatives.

Collaborating for a greener future

Increasingly, sustainability is being used as an industry buzzword and in many cases is associated with greenwashing. It is critical now more than ever that organisations not only take time and accountability to define what sustainability means for their operations, but also the steps they will take to ensure a greener, cleaner future.

Investment of time, resources and a commitment to collaboration is essential if we are to drive change across the maritime sector.
